As budgets shrink across the public sector, the NHS has been tasked to do much more with far less. However, for an organisation of 1.3 million staff, caring for over 1 million patients every 36 hours, across hundreds (461) of NHS trusts and several thousand (7,674) GP practices in England alone – this is no mean feat.

£4bn has been set aside for the NHS’ digital transformation, with services expected to have digital and interoperable systems by 2020 – removing the limitations of paper records and inefficient legacy systems.

As part of this drive towards a streamlined and paperless NHS, the government wants medical records to be available to the public via digital means, by May 2018. This digitisation of patient information will also help the NHS to improve operational and financial efficiency.

Improving efficiency while ensuring security

According to the NHS, technology will play a vital role in contributing to the £30bn in efficiency savings needed to sustain the healthcare system. Through digital transformation, the NHS hopes to reduce time-consuming administrative tasks for front-line staff, so they can spend more time doing what they do best – caring for patients.

A key part of digital transformation in the NHS will be ensuring that solutions are secure – due to the sensitivity of patient information and the increasingly stringent regulations surrounding the use of technology and data.

Securing Patient Identifiable Data (PID) has previously been such an obstacle to the NHS’ digital transformation, that almost 50 per cent of healthcare executives cited security as a reason for limiting investment in digital workspace technology. To help CIOs in the NHS overcome this challenge, there are a number of solutions that can support secure digital transformation.

The magic of mobility

VMWare Workspace ONE supplies care providers with a Digital Clinical Workspace they can access on the go. This enables simple, and more importantly secure, access and transfer of patient information from anywhere, on any device, at any time. Through computerised physician order entry and the electronic provision of controlled substances, NHS staff can streamline clinical workflows to provide the best patient care possible.

To simplify mobility and endpoint management, solutions such as VMWare AirWatch, will also help the NHS to promote secure staff collaboration – ensuring front-line clinicians can work together efficiently to improve patient care.
