Employees who are able to work both at home and in the office have not only been proven to be happier, but also more efficient; 83% of respondents in a recent Vodafone survey cited that the adoption of flexible working had resulted in improvements in productivity.

As well as increased productivity, companies can also save money through supporting flexible working – meaning less office space is required and overheads can be reduced. For example, since IBM started supporting flexible working, the company estimates it has saved $100m annually – so it really is a win-win for businesses.

Any channel, any time

To achieve the productivity gains flexible working promises, a unified communications (UC) solution is becoming essential. Today’s UCs solutions incorporate features such as audio/video conferencing, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony, instant messaging (IM) – and even functions such as interactive whiteboards and presence information.

Having this choice empowers workers to switch seamlessly between communication channels when it best suits the task in hand. For instance, email remains the staple method of office communication, as it has done for 20 years, but now flexible workers are embracing other channels to boost productivity, such as video conferencing and IM.

Integrating instant messaging

At one time, IM was reserved for sending notes to friends over social networks, but now companies are increasingly using IM in the workplace to reduce reliance on email and enable staff to communicate snapshots of information quickly. In fact, IM has become so popular, both professionally and recreationally, that the number of chat app users is expected to reach 2bn by 2018. 

Skype is one such IM tool, with 74 million people already making use of it to communicate and collaborate. With Skype for Business, organisations can access a comprehensive set of communications in addition to IM – such as audio/video conferencing – to further boost productivity.

Skype for Business is available as an on-premise, online or hybrid solution – it also has innovative features that provide an automated system to answer and route inbound calls using speech recognition, as well as the ability for administrators to identify and address call issues. Skype for Business is now also bundled with Office 365, however, many businesses still remain unaware of its availability and the benefits it can provide.
