How can I work with Power BI?

Power BI consists of a Windows desktop application called Power BI Desktop, an online SaaS (Software as a Service) service called the Power BI Service, and mobile Power BI Apps available on Windows phones and tablets, as well as for iOS and Android devices.

  • With Power BI Desktop, you get a powerful report-creating Windows desktop app that jump-starts your analytics. You can import Excel workbooks, upload reports to the service, and much more.

  • The Power BI Service is the online software service where users spend most of their time. Here you'll find dashboards, content packs, and all sorts of visualizations. You can take it with you.

  • With Power BI Mobile Apps for all major mobile platforms, have Power BI dashboards at your fingertips, no matter where you roam or with which device.

What editions of Power BI are available?

There are three editions of Power BI licenses:

  • Power BI (free)

  • Power BI Pro and

  • Power BI Premium.

Power BI (free) and Power BI Pro are User Subscription Licenses (USLs), Power BI Premium pricing is based on required capacity and the way users interact with it.

Microsoft National Clouds

Besides the Microsoft Public Cloud, Power BI is also available in three separate national clouds (US Government, Microsoft Cloud Germany, 21Vianet in China). Power BI and SharePoint – the road ahead
