Microsoft SharePoint 2016

Welcome to SharePoint Server 2016 - The new way of working together!

Microsoft’s team collaboration platform SharePoint has been released in the new 2016 version. With a clear focus on the cloud and SharePoint Online (which is part of  Office 365), Microsoft will also continue to offer an on premises version of the server with new update options for customers with Software Assurance.

Improved security, a new look and feel and a smartphone app are just some of the many innovations of SharePoint 2016.

SharePoint Server 2016 Features

Modernize your on-premise infrastructure improving speed, scale and enabling new user experiences. SharePoint Server 2016 brings cloud innovation to your datacenter so you can get the bes tof both worls - speed and productivity for your users with flexibility and control for IT.

Microsoft provides a new SharePoint app for Windows, Android and iOS devices which allows your employees to access SharePoint on the go. The app is reduced to the most important features for greater clarity. Documents can be synchronized easily and may be saved for offline usage.

SharePoint 2016 is highly integrated with other Microsoft Online Services, such as OneDrive or Office 365. This way, Online Services can be integrated seamlessly into the local SharePoint environment. The on premises as well as the online version of SharePoint are now more intelligent and automatically filter content and documents according to their relevance.

SharePoint Home is your new landing page and central starting point. It gives you a clear overview about relevant SharePoint sites – even if your organization manages a large amount of content in SharePoint. SharePoint Home is supported by Office Graph.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) is non-negotiable, and overexposure to information can have legal and compliance implications. SharePoint Server 2016 provides a broad array of features and capabilities designed to make certain that sensitive information remains protected with investments in DLP, new scenarios to enable data encryption as well as compliance tools that span on-premises servers and Office 365. They provide a balance between enabling user self-service and ensuring content usage adheres to corporate policy.

Thanks to durable links, a central problem of earlier SharePoint versions has been overcome – durable links are based on the resource ID of a document and not its file location. Thus, renaming a document or moving it will not invalidate your hyperlinks anymore. Site folders - as known from Office 365 - replace former inconsistent structures.

While innovations will be delivered to Office 365 first, Microsoft will provide many of the new experiences and frameworks to SharePoint Server 2016 customers with Software Assurance through Feature Packs. This means you won’t have to wait for the next version of SharePoint Server to take advantage of updates in your datacenter.

The first Feature Pack will be delivered through the public update channel starting in calendar year 2017, and customers will have control over which features will be enabled in their on-premises farms. Microsoft will provide more detail about their plans for Feature Packs in the coming months.
